Silk Painting

These images show elders who attend The Grange Day Centre partaking in various silk painting projects. The panel depicting the Snow Queen was part of a larger project carried out by Newcastle Library service. We completed one panel depicting Kay being taken by the snow Queen and four other community groups made panels from other parts of the story. The completed panels can be viewed at Newburn Library Newcastle upon Tyne

The Flower Panels were a response to the service users interests in gardens and flowers. A large collection of books was made available for the service users to choose. Once the flower had been chosen the design was outlined on to the silk and painted by the elders. A lot of people hadn't created or participated in any artwork before this project. Some were nervous about not "getting it right" but all felt a great sense of achievement once they had finished their piece.

The flower panels stimulated a lot of interest and really this project was the start of a larger project as the silk painting sessions are continuing at the Grange because of the impetus of this art group.
