We have for several years been committed to offering people the chance to undertake meaningful activities that they may not have had the opportunity to try in the past due to social, financial or physical disadvantage.
The images on this site show how this work has developed with people taking part in various art projects supported by professional artists. As they became more confident we had to meet the challenge of offering more and more.
The outdoor activities show the amazing confidence that service users have developed. As they bowl, ride bikes, take part in archery, ride in speedboats, and sail in canoes on the Tyne and abseil. These images speak for themselves and far exceed any expectations that we had at the beginning. It is a pure joy to be a part of a group of people who even in their eighties and nineties are willing to face the challenge to undertake activities that people half their age would be too afraid to try.
We feel passionately that retirement should still be a time of discovery and challenge and that people should be offered the opportunity to try new things. It is wonderful to impress a stranger who has low expectations of the abilities of elders but even more delightful when the elders themselves are impressed when they undertake a challenge and succeed. Long may it continue. I know you too will be impressed.
I hope this site encourages others to be brave enough to try or support elders to take part in meaningful activities and challenges.
